The principal values (eigenvalues) ε1,ε2,ε3 of a strain tensor ε are called the principal strains.

If the corresponding principal directions (eigenvectors) are 𝐧1,𝐧2,𝐧3, then

ε=i=13εi𝐧i𝐧i

is called the spectral decomposition of ε.
