Things get complicated when two or more dimensions are involved.

For simplicity, we make two assumptions:

  1. The deformation is such that the origin of a two-dimensional coordinate system remains motionless.
  2. All motion of points off the origin is linear. This is equivalent to stating that all partial derivatives of u(x,y) are constants.
