Ship form

Principal parameters to describe a ship

File:ShipsMainDimensions.JPG

The main dimensions of a ship are:

LBP = Length between perpendiculars
LOA = Length overall
LWL = Length at water line
  B = Breadth
  D = Height
  T = Draught (some use "d")
  F = Free board

Some other used characteristics to describe a ship are:

v = speed
DWT = dead weight
Δ = total mass of the ship with cargo

Buoyancy

File:ShipBuoyancy.JPG

The total weight of the ship: W=M*g

The absolute value of the water pressure: p=rho*g*(Tz)

Fz = Archimedes force
